Research Publications (PhD students/ RAs)

  • It is often assumed that younger researchers will pick up how to write research publications by osmosis!

We’ve found this often leaves students and RAs unconfident and unsure of how to write a research paper.

Writing for Academia provides content, examples and frameworks that help researchers understand how to write the key sections of research papers that will be read and enjoyed by the intended audience.

The programme also looks at the importance of writing for others and simply how to get words onto a page.

The programme can be delivered flexibly through in-person and online sessions. The option of assignments and feedback gives participants a chance to grow their writing skill by drafting sections of a paper.

This works well for groups of early career researchers with diverse levels of writing experience, e.g., cohorts of PhD students (including from CDTs/ DTPs), networks or research groups.

    Typically includes:

    • One-day in-person training

    • 2 × 3-hr online sessions (optional)

    • Assignments and feedback from trainer (optional)

    • One-to-one sessions with a trainer (optional)

    • Dedicated course website with recordings, worksheets and additional resources. Accessible for 6 months after the course ends

These are co-delivered with Dr Elaine Massung of Academic Smartcuts.
